Unmarked and unpaved access road. Dirt pull-off area euphemistically called a parking lot. A steep, slippery, difficult access trail. Absolutely no facilities or amenities.

All conspire to net a Kauai beach that is usually deserted on a weekday morning, except for the occasional local or hardy, in-the-know, tourist.

Ensconced between the coastal towns of Kilauea and Kalihiwai on the north shore of Kauai is this untouched slice of paradise, officially called the Kauapea Secret Beach, and unofficially called the Secret Beach Kauai or simply the “Secrets” by locals.

Stretching from the mouth of Kalihiwai Bay in the east to the cliffs of Kilauea Point on the west, the Kauapea Secret Beach is a stunning expanse of finely powdered white sands framed by majestic cliffs and jungles in the background and intense blue ocean waters in the front.

With close to a mile’s stretch from one end to the other, Kauapea Secret Beach is the perfect destination for the weary, work-worn vacationer looking for a peaceful escape.

Hidden beaches on the north shore of Kauai are not uncommon, the Hideaways Beach further up north comes to mind. But Hideaways Beach is a tiny cove and feels crowded when someone else drops by.

What is remarkable about the Secret Beach Kauai is its scale – at over 3000 feet long and quite wide, Kauapea Beach is huge and finding a quiet peaceful spot is a cinch.

In fact, the Secret Beach, at one time was informally reputed to be a nudist beach, until the local authorities shut it down (nudity is prohibited on Hawaiian beaches).

Be warned, you may still find a few flouting the law, but they usually stick to the east and west ends of the beach.
